Grape
VARIANT NAMES Caolongzhu, Mountain Bottle Gourd, Cattail Peach.
ORIGIN The fruit of Vitis vinifera [Vitaceae].
CHEMICAL COMPOSITION Containing glucose, fructose, a little sucrose, xylose,
tartaric acid, oxalic acid, citric acid, malic acid and mono-glucoside and die-glucoside of various
kinds of anthocyanidin. In every 100g of grape, there are 02.g of protein, 4mg of calcium, 15mg
of phosphorus, 0.6mg of iron, 0.04mg of carotene, 0.04mg of thiamine, 0.01mg of ovoflavin,
0. 1mg of nicotinic acid, 4mg of vitamin C.
NATURE, FLAVOR AND CHANNEL TROPISM Sweet, sour in flavor and neutral in
nature, acting on the channels of the lung, spleen and kidney.
EFFICIENCIES AND INDICATIONS Invigorating qi and enriching the blood,
strengthening the bones and muscles, and inducing diureses. It is used as a cure for deficiency of
qi and blood, cough due to deficiency of the lung, palpitation nightsweat, arthralgia due to
wind-dampness, stranguria and edema.
DIRECTIONS Eat it raw; soak it in wine, or decoct it for oral administration; or extract its
juice for drinking. Excessive eating will result in interior heat or diarrhea.
Tangerine
VARIANT NAMES Jushi, Huangju (Yellow Tangerine).
ORIGIN The ripe fruit of various kinds of tangerine such as Citrus tangerina or C.
erythrosa [Rutanccae].
CHEMICAL COMPOSITION Containing hesperidin malic acid, citric acid, glucose,
fructose, sucrose, vitamin C and B1, carotene and Cryptoxanthin.
NATURE, FLAVOR AND CHANNEL TROPISM Sweet, sour in flavor and cool in
nature, acting on the channels of the lung and stomach.
EFFICIENCIES AND INDICATIONS Promoting the function of stomach and regulating
the flow of qi, relieving thirst and moisturizing the lung. It is used to treat accumulation of qi in
the chest and diaphragm, vomiting and poor appetite, insufficiency of stomach-yin, dry mouth
and thirst, cough due to retention of pathogenic heat in the lung and excessive drinking.
DIRECTIONS Eat it raw after peeling, or sqeeze its juice out for oral administration.
These who have cough caused by wind-cold or phlegm-retention should not take it.
Hawthorn Fruit
VARIANT NAMES Shucha, yangqiu, Chiguashi, Chizaozi, Large-fruit, Chinese Haw,
Hongguo, Haihong, Sour Plum, Mountain Pear, Suanzha.
ORIGIN The fruit of crataegus pinnatifida or C. cuneala [Rosaceae].
CHEMICAL COMPOSITION Containing tartaric acid, citric acid, crataegolic acid, malic
acid, oleanolic acid, citric acid noids, lactone, sugars, glycosides, carotene, vitamin C and B2,
nicotinic acid, protein, tannin, calcium and iron.
NATURE, FLAVOR AND CHANNEL TROPISM Sour, sweet in flavor and slightly
warm in nature, acting on the channels of the spleen , stomach and liver.
EFFICIENCIES AND INDICATIONS Promoting digestion and strengthening the
stomach, promoting blood circulation and removing blood stasis, and expelling worms. It is used
for treatment of retention of meat and food in the stomach, mass in the abdomen, phlegm
retention, feeling of fullness in the chest and upper abdomen, diarrhea, dysentery, hematochezia,
lumbago, hernia, postpartum abdominal pain, lochiorrhea, milk stagnation of babies.
DIRECTIONS To be eaten raw; or decocted, or boiled down into jelly, or made into pills
or powder for internal use; it can also be boiled in water for external bathing, or pounded for
application to the affected part. Precaution should be taken by patients suffering from deficiency
of the spleen and stomach.
