Yellow Emperor said: “I hope to hear your explanation about the complexion and the pulse.” Qibo said: “When the complexion is green, the pulse condition should be wiry; when the complexion is red, the pulse condition should be hooked; when the complexion is yellow, the pulse condition should be intermittent; when the complexion is white, the pulse condition should be floating and slippery; when the complexion is black, the pulse condition should be stony. These are the regular patterns of the correspondences of the complexions and pulses. When the complexion is not in conformity with the pulse condition, and when, on the contrary, a subjugating pulse condition is seen, the patient will die; but when a producing pulse condition is seen, the disease of the patient will be cured.”
　　Yellow Emperor asked Qibo: “What are the changes and the appearance of the disease caused by the five-viscera?” Qibo answered: “It must ascertain first the correspondent relation between the five-colour of complexion and the five-condition of pulse, then can the disease be distinguished.” Yellow Emperor asked: “How can one distinguish the disease’s condition after the complexion and the pulse condition are ascertained?” Qibo answered: “When the slow or urgent, gigantic or small, slippery or choppy pulse condition is found after examining, the pathos can be ascertained.”
　　Yellow Emperor asked: “How to examine the changes of the pulse conditions and the skin of anterolateral side of the forearm?” Qibo said: “When the pulse is urgent, and the skin of anterolateral side of the forearm is also pressing, when the pulse is slow and the skin of anterolateral side of the forearm is also thin and deficient, when the pulse is gigantic and the skin of anterolateral side of the forearm is also large and protruding, when the pulse is slippery and the skin of anterolateral side of the forearm is also slippery, when the pulse is choppy and the skin of anterolateral side of the forearm is also choppy. In all the six kinds of changes, some are obscure and some are quite obvious. Thus, he who is good at examining pulse and he who is good at examining the pulse condition needs not wait until examining the patient’s complexion. When a physician can diagnose according to the three aspects of examining the complexion, palpating the pulse and inspecting the skin of anterolateral of the forearm, he is supposed to be a superior physician, and he can cure nine patients out of ten; when one can diagnose according to two aspects, he is supposed to be a physician of medium level, and he can cure seven patients out of ten; when one can diagnose according to one aspect only, he is supposed to be a physician of lower level, and he can cure six patients out of ten.”
　　Yellow Emperor asked: “What is the pathos when the pulse condition is slow, urgent, small, gigantic, slippery and choppy respectively?” Qibo said: “I will comment from the pathos of the five viscera: when the heart pulse is very urgent, muscular spasm will occur; when it is slightly urgent, heartache drawing the back and the syndrome of the patient can hardly take in the food will occur. When the heart pulse is very slow, uneasiness and boisterous laughing will occur; when it is slightly slow, the disease of fuliang (disease with epigastric fullness and mass due to stagnation of vital energy and blood) will occur, its energy can move upwards or downwards, and sometimes, it causes the patient to spit blood. When the heart pulse is gigantic, the patient feels like a sting obstructing in the throat, when it is slightly gigantic, the cardiac bi-syndrome with pain drawing the back will occur, and the tears of the patient fall often. When the heart pulse is very small, hiccup of the patient will occur, when it is small, diabetes will occur. When the heart pulse is very slippery, the patient will be very thirsty, when it is slightly slippery, heart-channel colic with pain drawing the naval and causing sound in the lower abdomen will occur, when the heart pulse is very choppy, the patient will become dumb, when it is slightly choppy, the spitting blood, hemorrhage and reverseness of the Yang pulse causing tinnitus and headache will occur.”
　　“When the lung pulse is very urgent, ‘dian disease’ on head will occur, when it is slightly urgent, cold and heat syndrome will occur, the patient will be tired and weak, spitting blood, becoming uncomfortable with pain drawing the loins, back and chest, and is troubled by the wart obstructing the nose. When the lung pulse is very slow, the patient will have hidrosis, when it is slightly slow, the syndromes of flaccidity, omalgia and unceasing sweating below the head will occur. When the lung pulse is very gigantic, swelling of the foot tibia will occur, when it is slightly gigantic, the lung-bi-syndrome drawing the chest and back to become uneasy will occur, and the patient detests the sunlight. When the lung pulse is very small, diarrhea will occur, when it is slightly small, diabetes will occur. When the lung pulse is very slippery, hemorrhage of mouth, nose, the front private part and the anus will occur. When the lung pulse is very choppy, hematemesis will occur, when it is slightly choppy, scrofula on the neck or under the armpit, and the pulse condition of asthenia in the lower part which can not withstand the sthenia in the upper part will occur; as metal can subjugate wood, the patient likes to take the sour taste extremely.”
　　When the liver pulse is very urgent, the mood of the patient will become abnormal and he talks rashly and talks nonsense, when it is slightly urgent, swelling mass due to the stagnation of lung like a bottom-up cup under the left hypochondrium will occur. When the lung pulse is very slow, vomiting will occur, when it is slightly slow, bi-syndrome due to accumulation of fluid will occur. When the liver pulse is very gigantic, internal carbuncle, often vomiting and epistaxis will occur, when it is slightly gigantic, hepatic bi-syndrome will occur, and the patient will have shrinkage of the external genitals and will feel pain in the lower abdomen when being drawn by coughing. When the liver pulse is very small, the patient will be thirsty and will drink a lot, when it is slightly small, the patient will eat a lot but often hungry and has the syndrome of muscular emaciation. When the liver pulse is very slippery, the scrotum will be swelling, when it is slightly slippery, enuresis will occur. When the liver pulse is very choppy, phlegm-retention syndrome will occur, when it is slightly choppy, convulsion and contracture of the muscle will occur.”
　　“When the spleen pulse is very urgent, convulsion of the extremities will occur, when it is slightly urgent, vomiting after food intake and thick foam in stool will occur. When the spleen pulse is very slow, the four limbs will be weak and cold, when it is slightly slow, flaccidity caused by wind evil and inconvenient of moving the extremities will occur, but the patient is quite clear and seems to have no disease. When the spleen pulse is very gigantic, the syndrome of piqi (mass formation due to asthenia of the spleen and stagnation of vital energy) wrapping with a lot of pus and blood outside of the intestine and stomach will occur. When the spleen pulse is very small, the syndrome of cold and heat will occur, when it is slightly small, emaciation of muscle will occur. When the spleen pulse is very slippery, the scrotum will be swelling and dysuria will occur, when it is slightly slippery, various parasitic infestation will occur, and the patient feels hot in the abdomen. When the spleen pulse is very choppy, gynecopathy of a woman will occur, when it is slightly choppy, internal ulcer and bloody stool will occur.”
