“The Hand Shaoyang Channel of Triple warmer begins from the channel’s Jing (Well) point of Guanchong (SJ. 1), flows to the Yuan (Source) point of Yangchi (SJ. 4), pours into the Jing (River) point of Zhigou (SJ. 6), reaches to Tianyou point (SJ. 18) on the head above, and reaches the collateral point of Waiguan (SJ. 5).”
　　“The Hand Yangming Channel of Large Intestine begins from the channel’s Jing (Well) point of Shangyang (LI. 1), flows to the Yuan (Source) point of Hegu (LI. 4), pours into the Jing (River) point of Yangxi (LI. 5), reaches the Futu point (LI. 18) on the neck, and reaches the Collateral point of Pianli (LI. 6). These are the locations where the twelve channels and collaterals flow and pour into, when the collateral is overabundant and full, it should be purged by pricking.”
　　“The channel-energy circulates in the body fifty cycles in a day and night. If the circulation of the refined energy of the five viscera is not in conformity with the fifty cycles to the faster or slower, one will be sick, and it is called ‘ getting ill’. The criterion of the fifty cycles can be used to observe the substantiality of deficiency of the five viscera, to count the times of the pulse beats when palpating, and to determine the robustness and the feebleness of the patient’s body. When the pulse does not stop once within fifty beats, it shows the refined energy of the five viscera is prosperous; when the pulse stops once within forty beats, it shows the energy fails to reach one of the viscera; when the pulse stops once within thirty beats, it shows the energy fails to reach two of the viscera; when the pulse stops once within twenty beats, it shows the energy fails to reach three of the viscera; when the pulse stops once within ten beats, it shows the energy fails to reach four of the viscera; when the pulse stops within less than ten beats, it shows the energy fails to reach all the viscera, and the patient will die in a short period. So, it is important to observe the condition of the pulse. When the pulse beats fifty times without stopping, it is the normal pulse condition of the five viscera form which one can know the refined energy in the five viscera is normal. As to whether the patient will die in a short period, it is determined by the fast and slow conditions by turns of the pulses beasts.”
　　Yellow Emperor said: “There are five kinds of normal and abnormal physiques in men, in the various physiques, there are large or small sizes in the joints, firm or crisp of the muscle, thick or thin of the skin, clear or turbid of the blood, slippery or choppy of the circulation of energy, long or short of the channel, different in the density of blood and different number in the channel and collateral, and I have understood all the conditions already. But they are denoting the conditions of the labouring people. As to the princes and nobles who take meat every day, their bodies are feeble, and their blood circulation is rapid and slippery, can the treating to them such as swift or slow inserting, deep or shallow pricking and the number in pricking the acupoints be the same with that of treating the labouring people?” Qibo answered: “When treating the people who usually take meat, fine flour and rice, must not be the same with the people who take coarse grain. To the patient who has a slippery energy, the pulling of needle should be swift; to the patient who has a choppy energy, the pulling of needle should be slow; to the patient who has a slippery energy, it should prick shallowly with a small needle, to the people who has a choppy energy, it should prick deeply with a large needle; when pricking deeply, the needle should be retained, when pricking shallowly, the pricking of needle should be deep and the needle should be retained, to the princes and nobles, the pricking should be shallow, and the inserting should be slow, as their energies are rapid and slippery which are apt to induce the abnormal conditions.”
　　Yellow Emperor asked: “How to treat when the physique and function are deficient or having a surplus?” Qibo said: “When the physique and function are deficient and the evil energy is having a surplus, it is the condition of sthenic of the evil energy, and the evil energy should be purged hastily; when the physique and function are having a surplus and the evil energy is deficient, it should be invigorated hastily; when the physique and function are having a surplus and the evil energy is deficient, it should be invigorated hastily; when the physique and function are deficient and the evil energy is also deficient, it shows both the Yin and Yang are deficient, when treating, it must not treat by pricking, if it is pricked erroneously, the healthy energy of the patient will be deficient all the more to cause exhaustion of both the Yin and Yang, the blood and energy will all be used up, the energy of the five viscera will be emptied and the tendon and marrow will be withered. In this case, an old man will die, and the disease of a man in his prime of life can hardly be recovered. If the physique and function are having a surplus, and the evil energy is also having a surplus, it should purge the sthenic evil and adjust the asthenia and sthenic to keep them in balance. So, purge when there is having a surplus and invigorate when there is a deficiency.”
　　“Therefore, when one knows not the treating principle of purging and invigorating, adverse and agreeable, it will cause the contention of the healthy energy and the evil energy. If the disease of sthenic evil is treated erroneously with invigorating therapy, both the Yin and Yang will be overabundant which will cause the fullness of the intestine and the stomach, distention of the liver and lung inside and the disorder of Yin and Yang. If the disease of asthenia of healthy energy is treated erroneously with purging therapy, the channel will be emptied, the blood and energy will be exhausted, the intestine and stomach will be emaciated with the skin attaching the bone, the fine hair becomes short and the striae become dried, and the patient will die in a short period. Thus, the main clue of acupuncture is in the knowing of the principle of adjusting. When Yin and Yang are adjusted, the refined energy of the patient will be abundant, the physique and function will be unified, and the spirit will be able to store inside. The physician of higher level can keep the energies in balance, the physique of medium level can treat the patient according to the pulse condition, and the physician of lower level can only exhaust the energy and cause danger to the patient’s life. So, in pricking, it must be very cautious. One must observe the changes of the five viscera, the asthenia and sthenic of the channels and the soft and coarse of the skin first, then, treat by pricking the proper acupoint.”
